Southern Flinders Regional Tourism Authority

In 1999, the District Council of Mount Remarkable (“the Council”), the Northern Areas Council, the Port Pirie Regional Council, and the Port Pirie Regional Development Board (now Regional Development Australia Yorke and Mid North, but formally the Southern Flinders Ranges Development Board) formed the Southern Flinders Regional Tourism Authority (“the Authority”).

In 2006, the Port Pirie Regional Council formally withdrew its involvement in the collaborative arrangement. This move resulted in a review of the Authority and of this Policy Document.

In 2008, the District Council of Orroroo Carrieton formally became involved in this arrangement as a constituent Council, which also resulted in a review of the Authority and of this Policy Document.

In 2009, the Port Pirie Regional Council again became formally involved in this arrangement as a constituent Council, which also resulted in a review of the Authority and of this Policy Document.

The Authority is a Committee of each of the above Local Government entities and is established pursuant to the provisions of Section 41 of the Local Government Act 1999 (“the Act”).  Although a Committee of each of the constituent Councils, the Committee is referred to as the ‘Southern Flinders Regional Tourism Authority’.

The Southern Flinders Tourism Region (“the region”) comprises the areas of the District Council of Mount Remarkable, the Northern Areas Council and the Port Pirie Regional Council. The District Council of Orroroo Carrieton, whilst not formally part of the Southern Flinders Tourism Region, has strong ties and linkages to it and is part of the broader Flinders Ranges and Outback SA Tourism Region. Whilst the Authority generally considers the Region as a whole, its primary focus is on the areas of the four (4) constituent Councils.
