Each year the District Council of Mount Remarkable invites nominations from citizens, community groups and organisations for the District Council of Mount Remarkable Australia Day Awards. The awards aim to recognise outstanding achievement during the past year and/or contribution to the local community over a number of years.
Councillors considered the Australia Day Award nominations at the Ordinary Meeting of Council held in December and awarded the District Council of Mount Remarkable Citizen of the Year Award 2018 to Michael Wigg of Wilmington, Young Citizen of the Year Award to Helane Blieschke of Melrose and the Community Event of the Year Award to the Wirrabara Art & Craft Spectacular. Congratulations to all the award winners.
Awards are presented in recognition of personal achievement and to acknowledge the contribution that Our Locals are making to Our Communities. The awards will be presented 26 January 2018 at the winners nominated Australia Day Event.
Michael Wigg – Citizen of the Year Award 2018
Michael is recognised for his valuable and hardworking commitment to the Wilmington Progress Society, Wilmington CFS, Booleroo Centre Ambulance Service, church groups and environmental groups. Michael has been an integral part of the Wilmington Progress Society, holding office bearer positions, promoting and developing the community as well as volunteering at various functions. He maintains the Wilmington defibrillator and as an ambulance officer he is the first responder in and around Wilmington. Under the auspice of the Wilmington Progress Society he is volunteer supervisor of the Wilmington Community Development/Work for the Dole program which aims to build the skill levels of unemployed people for future employment. In addition to the benefits this work provides to the participants it has been positively reflected in the wider community with many beautification projects including painting, repairs, mowing, and signage being completed. His passion for the environment is reflected in his commitment to the annual Wilmington Clean up Australia Day, growing trees and shrubs for the roadsides and the control of weeds around the township. Michael has held the position of chairperson and treasurer of the Wilmington Uniting Church for several years.
Helane Blieschke – Young Citizen of the Year Award 2018
A vibrant and enthusiastic young member of the Melrose community Helane has been recognised for her passion and commitment to a number of community organisations in Melrose. Helane has taken on many roles and held office bearer positions with the committees she is a member of. A long term member of the Melrose Community Development Association she is the current secretary, regularly volunteers for fundraising events, Clean up Australia Day events and other local events. Helane is also secretary of the Melrose Tennis Club, team captain and assists with junior coaching. In 2016 she was the Mount Remarkable Show Rural Ambassador. She is keen on agricultural and a proactive member of the committee and promotion of the annual Melrose Show. Helane is energetic, committed, enjoys sport and is passionate about her community. She is a great role model and ambassador for the youth of the District Council of Mount Remarkable.
Wirrabara Arts & Crafts Spectacular – Community Event of the Year 2018
A volunteer managed event providing an Art Exhibition whereby local artists can showcase and demonstrate their arts and crafts the Wirrabara Arts & Crafts Spectacular was first held in 2014 and has been recognised for its promotion of local artists and the Wirrabara Community. The 2017 Spectacular involved 24 exhibitors and included, but not limited to, timber work, photography, felt work, wool, quilting and folk art products. The Wirrabara Arts & Crafts initiative assists the local economy and its valuable contribution to the community enhance community cohesion and sense of pride.
