The District Council of Mount Remarkable is committed to maintaining high standards in waste management for the community. 

See below for information on locations, operating times, guidelines and resources to help with mananging sustainable waste systems. 

Landfill and Transfer Stations 

Council owns and operates one landfill and two transfer stations. Residents are able to dispose of all additional general waste, scrap metal and green waste at the two transfer stations.  Tyres, e-waste, waste oil and any disposals over a tonne can only be accepted at the Willowie Landfill.  The below fees and charges apply to additional waste outside the regular kerb rubbish collection provided. Clean green waste and e-waste is accepted free of charge.

Both Transfer stations operate on the same Friday fortnightly as per Zone 3 of the Waste Management Calendar, (marked in yellow) and commenced on 3rd of May 2019, times for respective station are below:
 
Port Germein Transfer Station:
Operating Hours: 9.30 am - 11.30 am on Friday (Fortnightly)
 
Wirrabara Transfer Station:
Operating Hours: 1.30 pm - 3.30 pm on Friday (Fortnightly) 
 
Wirrabara Volunteer Opening Hours: 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm on Sunday (1st Sunday of each month) Note: will not open 37 degrees or above as per forecast for Port Pirie on Seven Spencer Gulf News the night before.

Please note that in the interest of safety, both transfer stations and the Willowie Landfill are closed on CFS declared Catastrophic and Severe Fire Ban Days, for further information regarding fire bans, please visit the  CFS Website.

All Landfill and Transfer Stations are closed on Christmas Day and Public Holidays 

Roadside Collection 

Council provides a roadside collection for general and recycling waste. Collection dates are, singleFile 2019-2020 Waste Calendar

 See below for collection guidelines;

  • Bins are to be out for collection no later than 6.00am on collection days.
  • The Contractor may move your bin to a preferred location in order to maximise efficiency of collection. Residents should note this as the best location for future collections. If the bin is not put in this spot for future collections, it will not be emptied. 
  • As of November 2015, Council has implemented the correct bin identification in accordance with the National Standards, being
    • General Waste (140 litres) – Red bin lid
    • Recycling (240 litres) – Yellow bin lid
  • Should your Recycling Bin not have a yellow lid, or a yellow Recycling sticker, please contact Council to make arrangements to have a lid or sticker delivered or picked up.
  • Should either of your bins not have a lid, it will not be emptied by the Contractor. This is due to a number of reasons, including (but not limited to) possible risk of rubbish falling from the bin while being emptied, bins blowing over in strong wind, bins being filled with rainwater, etc.
  • Those on the defined route will be charged within their Council Rates, the standard collection fee (this is comprised of one weekly General Waste collection and one fortnightly Recycle collection).
  • Those not on the defined route will be charged per week, for the collection/s specified on this form. Those not on the defined route will be charged via invoice, however they may choose to have a ‘Non-Compulsory’ service charge imposed on their Rates Notices instead. Please advise Council in writing if this is preferred.
  • The township of Hammond will have their General Waste collected per fortnight, however residents may put two standard General Waste bins out for collection. The township will have their Recycling collected per month and may have two standard Recycling bins out for collection.
  • Should you require extra bins or collection services, please contact Council to obtain a Request Form.

The District Council of Mount Remarkable, at the Willowie Landfill and both Transfer Stations (Wirrabara and Port Germein), offers options for other waste disposal including Tyres and Waste Oil. Please see the below information sheets for more information.

Rate Payers can dispose of clean green waste free of charge at the Landfill and both Transfer Stations.

E-waste Recycling

Council has formed a partnership with TechCollect to accept e-waste (as defined below) at the Wirrabara Transfer Station, the Port Germein Transfer Station and the Willowie Regional Landfill. The collection of e-waste at these 3 sites is free and ongoing. 

E-waste is defined as:

  • Televisions
  • Computers, including
    • Computer monitors and drives
    • Laptops/notebooks
    • PDAs/Tablets 
    • All other computers 
  • Monitors & Projectors, including 
    • Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors & projectors
    • LCD/flat panel monitors
  • Printers, scanners, fax machines & Multi-Functional Devices (MFDs)
  • Computer peripherals, including
    • Power supplies, adaptors & UPS
    • Cables
    • Parts & accessories 

The following products will not be accepted under the scheme. They can be disposed of under the Hard Waste Collection.

  • DVD players, VCRs, Set-top boxes
  • Game consoles
  • cameras, video recorders 
  • Mobile Phones & accessories 
  • Sound systems & CD players 
  • White goods: Fridges, washing machines, dryers, microwaves 
  • Vacuum cleaners 
  • Other kitchen & house hold electronic appliances 
  • Loose batteries (General waste)
  • Loose printer cartridges 

Hazardous waste, including CRT TVs that have been broken or damaged or removed from the case of the TV will not be accepted.

Why recycle e-waste?


Televisions and computers contain hazardous material, such as lead, cadmium and mercury, which need to be managed in a safe manner. Recyclable materials that can be recovered from televisions and computers including glass and plastics, iron, steel, aluminium and copper, and precious metals such as gold, platinum and silver. Sending these products to landfill means the resources they contain are lost. Television and computer waste has increased, due to the high rate of these products going to landfill poses a number of problems for Australia, including loss of non-renewable resources and risks to human health and the environment because of the hazardous substances that these products contain.

Will have to pay anything to bring my e-waste in and can everyone access the service?


There is no cost to consumers. Consumers can drop off their unwanted end of life televisions and/or computers at a designated location free of charge. The service is offered to households and small business only. It is not designed to receive commercial quantities of electronic waste.

What happens to data on my hard drive?


Data typically stored on hard drives, disks, tapes and memory is physically destroyed in the recycling process. At an automated facility it is shredded with other metals in a special machine. Where the recycling process is more manual, the hard drive is removed from the unit and physically damaged. It is then heated and shredded into small pieces. However data destruction remains the responsibility of the customer and Council does not accept any liability in case of data access through e-waste recycling.

Can customers remove televisions and computer waste from the Council collection sites?


Television and computer waste cannot be removed from the bins under any circumstances. Council gives an undertaking to recycle all product collected. Site workers and/or the general public/customers are not allowed to remove any products delivered by the public for the purpose of recycling.

How are some of the recycled materials used?


Recycled plastics are used in the manufacturing of products including outdoor furniture, plastic pot plants, vehicle dashboards, traffic management features, landscaping products etc. 

Metals are reprocessed in the same base metals for use in the manufacture of new products
